A US product that reads customers' bank data is being built against a rule that is final on paper and stalled in practice, so the Node.js integration has to survive either outcome. The CFPB finalized its Personal Financial Data Rights rule under section 1033 of Dodd-Frank in October 2024. It requires a covered data provider to run a developer interface alongside the consumer one, forbids letting a third party into that developer interface with the credentials the consumer logs in with, and forbids charging for access. Banks challenged it in the Eastern District of Kentucky. A court order tolled the compliance dates by 90 days, which moved the first one from 1 April to 30 June 2026, and on 29 October 2025 the court enjoined the CFPB from enforcing the rule while the Bureau rewrites it. The Bureau's advance notice of 22 August 2025 reopened four questions: who may act as the consumer's representative, fees, data security and privacy. Its proposed rule reached the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs for review in August 2026 and had not been published by the start of October. So free, API-only access is the rule's stated aim rather than a line to put in a cost model. The Financial Data Exchange, recognized by the CFPB as a standard-setting body in January 2025, publishes the API that banks' developer interfaces are being shaped around. In the backend we put the aggregator or the bank's FDX endpoint behind one adapter of our own, keep each consent with its scope and expiry as a record of its own rather than as a token inside a job payload, and treat an expired or revoked grant as an ordinary state with a path back for the user. When the rule settles, a new provider or a new price is a new adapter, not a rewrite. Whether the rule reaches you, and in which role, is for your own counsel.
Selling a Node.js SaaS product to federal agencies changed shape in 2026, and the change favors teams whose security evidence comes out of the pipeline rather than a binder. OMB memo M-26-05 of 23 January 2026 rescinded M-22-18 and its companion M-23-16, so the secure software development attestation form is no longer a government-wide requirement. Agencies may still use it, and they may write contract terms requiring a current software bill of materials on request; for a cloud platform the memo says that term should call for an SBOM of the runtime production environment. In a Node service that is not the lockfile sitting in the repository but what actually runs: the installed dependency tree, the Node.js binary and the base image under it, regenerated for each release and tied to the image digest that shipped. Authorization is moving the same way. FedRAMP 20x, announced in March 2025, assesses a cloud service through Key Security Indicators checked by automated validation instead of a static yearly manual assessment, and its rules are now final for Class A, Class B (Low) and Class C (Moderate) certifications, with the public submission pipeline planned to open between July and September 2026. FedRAMP says it will stop accepting new Rev5 certifications on 11 June 2027, so a product starting the process now is starting on 20x. Among the traits its Phase 2 pilot found in fast reviews were consistent machine-readable schemas, concise evidence and assessors reviewing the validation code itself. For a TypeScript backend that means the checks behind each indicator are scripts in the repository that produce machine-readable output on every run, rather than screenshots gathered the week before an assessment. State and local buyers often look instead for GovRAMP, the program called StateRAMP until February 2025. Which certification class fits your product is for your FedRAMP advisor and the agency buying it.
Instant payments are the US rail a Node.js platform is most likely to add next, and they behave unlike the card and ACH flows most American payment code was written around. The Clearing House's RTP network operates 24/7, its settlement is final and irrevocable, its credit transfer limit has been $10 million since 9 February 2025, and it carries a request for payment message for bills and invoices. The Federal Reserve's FedNow Service runs around the clock every day of the year, raised its network limit from $1 million to $10 million in November 2025, and leaves each financial institution free to set lower limits of its own. A software company does not connect to either network itself. Both are reached through a participating bank or a processor's API, so the first question is what your own bank supports, sending, receiving or request for payment, and at what limit. What changes in the backend is time and finality. A credit can land at three in the morning on a Sunday, so the webhook reporting it has to be handled by a worker that is actually running, idempotent against the bank's retries, and able to release an order or a payout with nobody awake. There is no return window to absorb a mistake either. RTP gives the sending bank a message to request the return of funds, which is a request and not a reversal, so the confirmation before a payout and the check on changed payee details carry the weight a dispute window carries on ACH. Reconciliation moves from a nightly file to a stream of events, and a ledger that posts once a night reports balances that stopped being true hours earlier, which matters most when the money arrived on a Saturday and the customer expects the goods on Saturday too. The limits and fraud duties that apply to you are set by your bank's agreement, which your bank and counsel read before launch.

Does our site have to meet ADA accessibility requirements?
If you are consumer facing in the US, build as though it does. Demand letters over inaccessible websites are routine and cheap to send, federal work brings Section 508 with it, and the Department of Justice rule under Title II sets WCAG 2.1 AA for state and local government entities on a timetable your counsel can confirm for your size band. We work to WCAG 2.2 AA and test with a screen reader rather than relying on an automated scan, because automated tools catch perhaps a third of real issues and the other two thirds are the ones that end up in a letter.
How do we know you will still be here in two years?
Nobody can promise you that, and a supplier who does is selling something. We have been building since 2021 and we maintain what we build, which is the honest version of the answer. The useful version is that it should not have to matter. The repository is in your GitHub organization, the domain and hosting accounts are in your company name, the stack is Next.js, Laravel, Flutter and Postgres rather than anything only we can read, and the handover document exists before you ask for it. If we vanished tomorrow, another agency could pick it up without needing to call us.
Can you sign our NDA and work under our MSA?
Yes to the NDA. Send your standard one and it comes back signed within 24 hours, before you describe the project in any detail. Yes to the MSA too, with the caveat that we read it properly rather than signing to be agreeable. The two clauses we usually come back on are unlimited liability, where we ask for a cap tied to the fees, and an IP clause drafted broadly enough to sweep in the internal tooling we bring to every project. Something breaks at two in the afternoon in Chicago. What actually happens?
Two in the afternoon in Chicago is past midnight here, half past midnight in summer and half past one in winter, so the truthful answer depends on what you are paying for. Monitoring does not keep our hours and the alert fires whatever the clock says. Whether a person is awake to act on it depends on your plan, because we are not a 24/7 on-call operation as standard, and we would rather tell you that while you are choosing a plan than while your checkout is down. Without out-of-hours cover written into the contract, the realistic answer is that it is picked up at the start of our day, which is the middle of your night, and you should price that in when you decide.

NestJS for projects expected to grow past 10-15 contributors or 50+ endpoints, its opinionated structure pays back. Plain Express + custom architecture for smaller projects, MVPs, and tight deadlines. We use both regularly and pick per project.
REST or GraphQL?
REST when consumers are first-party (your own front-end, your own mobile app), the data model is simple, and you don't need flexible querying. GraphQL when you have multiple front-ends with different data needs, complex nested relationships, or third-party API consumers. Most of our recent backends are REST, GraphQL is over-applied for projects that don't need it.
Can you build the mobile app backend AND the mobile app?
